Hong Kong-Texas Connection Strengthened

Director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, Ms Jacko Tsang, was in Texas to strengthen connection between Hong Kong and Texas, and to foster ties with business communities in Austin.

During her official visit on March 13-16, Ms Tsang met with Ms Shirley Temple, International & Industry Team Lead, and International Investment & Trade Representative (Americas/Europe) of Texas Economic Development of the Office of Governor Greg Abbott.  At the meeting on Mar 14, Ms Tsang shared the latest updates on Hong Kong from, economic performance and COVID-19 situation to the city’s strengths and business opportunities. 

Ms Tsang visited the Austin Chamber of Commerce on Mar 15 where she had a meeting with Mr Ali Khataw, Board Chair-Elect, and Mr Roland Peña, Senior Vice President (Global Technology and Innovation). Ms Tsang introduced the work and priorities of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in San Francisco, while Mr Khataw and Mr Peña discussed the projects and initiatives of the Chamber.  They shared common goals for the two offices to collaborate with a view to fostering closer economic and business ties between Hong Kong and Austin.

Ms Tsang also called on the office of the City of Austin and the World Affairs Council of Austin , meeting with Mr Abdallah Mahmoud, International Economic Development Program Manager, Economic Development Department, City of Austin, and Mr Ben Ramirez, VP & Executive Director of the World Affairs Council.  Ms Tsang was pleased to learn about the incredible growth of the City of Austin and the challenges it faces, and shared opportunities in Hong Kong available for Austin businesses.

Concluding her visit, Ms Jacko Tsang attended the Hong Kong Market Briefing & Reception co-organized with the Greater Austin Asian Chamber of Commerce on Mar 15.

At the event, Ms Tsang spoke at a panel discussion on Hong Kong’s business and investment opportunities for Austin businesses. She shared with the audience the tremendous potential offered by various government initiatives introduced to promote small and medium enterprises, to foster start-ups, and to stimulate the innovation and technology development in Hong Kong.Among Hong Kong’s many advantages is the city’s key role in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA).  Ms Tsang introduced the development plan of the GBA and highlighted Hong Kong’s advantages as the premier gateway for US businesses seeking to tap into the markets in Mainland China and other parts of Asia.

Ms Regina Lai, Regional Director of The Hong Kong Trade Development Council, Americas was the other panelist at the discussion, which was moderated by Mr Clifford K Chiu, Senior Advisor and External Corporate Director of Vista Equity Partners.
