In celebration of the performance of the Dream of the Red Chamber Opera in San Francisco, the Chinese Culture Center hosted a special dialogue with Dream’s Production Designer, Tim Yip, on August 27. Making his San Francisco Opera debut, Yip is an art director and designer from Hong Kong, best known for his work in film. In 2001, he won the Academy Award for art direction for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon as well as a BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) award for the film’s costume design.
The talk was sponsored by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in San Francisco and attracted an audience of more than 200. The conversation included discussion of Yip’s career, inspiration, design work and his contemporary art projects. It also brought the awareness of the performance of Dream of the Red Chamber, which held its world premiere in San Francisco on September 10.
